Online Architecture Degree

Architecture–a combination of technical precision and dashes of artistic flair. Think of all the places people go every week: homes, work, malls, theaters, restaurants, churches, and schools across America. Each building was designed by an architect. While you likely won’t be designing crazy works like Gaudi’s (though you certainly can), your skills will be in demand somewhere. This field could be compelling to you if

  • you’ve enjoyed building Lego structures
  • sciences and engineering interest you
  • you prefer to work mostly with others on projects
  • you don’t mind developing a lot of reports, paperwork, and drawings

Some common careers include urban planner, architect, surveyor, and architectural project manager. First you’ll need to get a degree, at least a Bachelor of Science or Arts, and perhaps a Master of Architecture. Fortunately, there are many courses offered online, so you can study beneath the Eiffel Tower, or inside the Burj Khalifa.

What will my studies be like?

To earn your online architecture degree, you should expect about 5 years of study, or more for an advanced degree. Your schedule will be flexible, and you can study from the comfort of your home. (From time to time, you might be in a classroom on campus.) Bachelor of Architecture programs are specialized, to deliver you to your career more directly. Courses usually include architectural history/theory, design, computer aided drafting and design (CADD), construction methods and materials, green building, math, sciences, and liberal arts. Programs are stringent and challenging academically. They provide a lot of hands-on experience as well. Applying concepts may take place in a studio, where you draw and create 3D models. You will probably be expected to obtain an internship or work under professional supervision, which can last from one semester to most of the five years. This will give you opportunities to work with real clients, be involved in real projects, and visit construction sites to gain an unders anding of what work in the field is like.

Licensure as an architect necessitates a professional degree, practical training, and passing all parts of the Architect Registration Examination. If you live in the U.S., you’ll have to complete these requirements.
