While online schools are gaining more and more acceptance in the workplace, there are still some schools out there (commonly referred to as “degree mills”) that are causing grief for everyone else. It is especially important that when you choose your online school and program that you are sure it is properly accredited and provides the real education and training you need.
An Unfortunate Example
In Fruitland Park, FL there has been something of a controversy over the current Police Chief, Mark Isom. He is facing a Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission panel over an allegedly phony college degree. No charges have been filed yet, but they are looking very closely into the case and reviewing his certifications.
Police Chief Mark Isom apparently received some incentive pay for what was supposed to be his attendance at an accredited criminal justice Bachelors degree online. Isom claimed to have taken courses from 2003 to 2009, but it appears that he only made a one-time payment to receive a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in criminology.
An investigation into the college suggests that it was a bogus institution and one of those “degree mills” that are causing so many problems, but in a later report it was said that this would be difficult to prove. Since then, Isom has made some reimbursements of his incentive pay and says that he was scammed by the school, which claimed to be accredited.
