March Madness – Brains vs Wins 2011 [infographic]

Every year in March, college basketball captures nationwide attention. What escapes our attention is what happens to the players when the season is over. Many strong basketball schools are doing a pathetic job of graduating their players. Compared to our football graduation stats, some schools are doing half as well or worse. If Brains and Wins have anything to do with March Madness, everyone is about to get Jimmered. We tallied the basketball player grad rates and win rates over the last 6 years and came up with a Student Athlete Score for each school.

The winner?

Brigham Young University. The two highest scoring schools in the tournament were Utah schools (BYU and Utah State). Both have solid teams that have won a lot of games over the past 6 years, but what really pushed them to the forefront is that they have graduated 100% of their players*.

To see how this Student Athlete bracket is doing, check out our live updates here.

Only 3 other schools also maintained a 100% graduation rate for their basketball players:

  • Notre Dame
  • Marquette
  • Wofford

Is your favorite college team well-rounded or one-dimensional? Are they student athletes or have they fouled out? Feel free to use this data to razz your rivals and promote your program… unless you cheer for Georgia or Arizona. Then you’re in no position to trash talk, unfortunately.

Princeton has a 0% graduation rate of it’s Student Athletes? Oh how times have changes since the days of Bill Bradley!

They did not supply any data, which means they definitely have graduates, but the university didn’t want to give their data to this survey. I’m positive Princeton would have high graduation rates, it’s Princeton.

Since creating this graphic, I found an article that reports the graduation rate for Princeton players at 100%. However, the NCAA does not report this data. You can see a ranked report of graduation rates here:

5 Schools with 100% Graduating Rates and 2 of them face each other in the first round (BYU/Wofford). What are the chances?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LNLLZGY3ATXG5AUXAXNK7YHRME DavidA

      the chances are 5/64 X 4/63 = .00496.
The chances are a little under 1 in 200

Ok, seriously BYU! I don’t think so. However, I must admit that I’m quite surprised to see any top seeded team in the final four considering many good players bail to the NBA before finishing their senior year. Kudos to all the schools with high grad rates.

AggieFan, you shouldn’t be so pessimistic. Utah State is a 12 seed making it to the Elite Eight in this graphic! Also, from this research, Aggies had the second highest Student Athlete score of any school in the tournament. So props to you.
