Comments about Academy of Art University:
Tuition at the Academy of Art isn't cheap so my expectations were high. Once classes started I realized that my instructors' expectations of me were just as high. There were no breeze-through classes. They demanded attention, commitment and quality work.
As an out-of-state student, 100% of my classes have been online. The course modules are usually easy to follow, feedback is usually prompt and the workload is almost always tough.
Instructors seem to take their responsibility very seriously, working to make sure our time and money were well spent. It's been up to me to acquire the equipment and materials needed for courses on drawing, model building and photography, etc. They do not baby you. They assume competence and expect hard work.
Despite the similarity of online class webpages, each course has had a distinct 'personality.' The chemistry among students and the instructor makes for a surprising variety of experiences, almost always positive. Styles and personalities came through in ways I never expected and I've found I interact more closely with students online than I did with students in an actual classroom.
One of the biggest strengths of the A of A is their team of advisers. They make it easy to navigate the intimidating process of determining class schedules, registration and financial aid. This was a big relief to me, personally.
Spending so much money on a master's degree makes me nervous, and since I'm still a student I won't know for a while whether the pay-off is worth it. Time will tell, but in the mean time, I have homework to do.
