As a comprehensive institution of higher education, Angelo State University provides a strong academic experience while offering significant financial support to students. As a result, the university’s academic quality and low student-faculty ratio (20-1) prepare students for success in their chosen professions or acceptance to graduate and professional school, such as medicine and law. ASU offers an extensive gift aid program to help students pay for their education. \r\n\r\nASU turns out graduates who can think critically, adapt to a changing world and succeed in various environments, whether in technology, business, the arts, the sciences or graduate/professional school. Students desiring a more rigorous academic experience can apply to ASU’s dynamic Honors Program while those desiring study abroad can participate in a growing International Studies Program that provides a more global experience while keeping costs within reach. Angelo State is recognized for strong academic programs in teacher preparation, nursing and agriculture. ASU also boasts the only Physics Department in Texas ranked in the top 20 among undergraduate programs nationwide and a nationally recognized Biology Department which in 2007 became the first department in the nation to have its biology honor society named the top chapter in the nation a record six times. The Computer Science Department offers a popular sequence in computer game design and development, leading to a certificate in computer gaming. The university’s criminal justice and psychology programs are popular with students.\r\n\r\nAcademically, the university is organized with six colleges: Business; Education; Liberal and Fine Arts; Nursing and Allied Health; Sciences; and Graduate Studies as well as 21 academic departments. Those departments offer 45 undergraduate programs, 28 graduate programs, including a doctorate, and one associate degree as well as more than 100 majors. As a member of the Texas Tech University System, ASU provides options for a variety of pre-professional and 2+2 and 4+1 programs with Texas Tech. ASU draws students from practically every county in Texas (217 of 254) as well as from 42 states and 19 countries. With more than half of its graduates as first generation college students, ASU is attuned to the academic and social needs of a new generation of college students. \r\n\r\nIn addition to strong academic offerings, ASU provides an ultramodern, 268-acre campus that offers an attractive and safe setting for a college education. ASU’s campus facilities are valued at over $345 million and include the Math-Computer Science Building, which houses one of the most sophisticated computer systems in the state; the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, one of the top facilities in all of NCAA Division II athletics; and the Houston-Harte University Center; the center of campus student life. Additionally, the university operates 6,000 additional acres in farm and ranch lands that also serve as home for ASU’s Management, Instruction and Research Center as well as the Food Safety and Product Development Laboratory.\r\n\r\nAngelo State also manages one of the nation’s largest scholarship endowments. Funded by the Robert G. and Nona K. Carr Scholarship Foundation, Carr Scholarships help ASU many students secure a college education. Established in 1978 exclusively to benefit needy and deserving ASU students, the Carr Foundation today holds assets of more than $86million. For the 2010-11 academic year, more than $3.6 million in Carr Scholarships were awarded to ASU students. \r\n
