Comments about Art Center College of Design:
Going to Art Center is like going to the Harvard of art schools, cost included. The level of commitment required can be overwhelming at times, with classes 5-6 days per week, and 60-80 hours of homework per week. Any illusions of a leisurely education in art will be shattered immediately. With the rigorous nature of the training, progress is greatly accelerated, and one can almost always distinguish the work of an Art Center grad from any other.
The real strength of the school is not the instructors, some of whom are a waste of time, while others are life-changing in their mentoring and instruction; the strength of the school is the student body. The level of ability brought by the students makes for a competitive environment, and pushes the boundaries of any student.
The biggest cons to Art Center are cost and post graduation opportunities. Loans of at least $100,000 will be required for a degree, with no guarantee of success afterwards. A lack of internships and job placement after graduation means that many graduates spend long periods unemployed, and earning $24-30k per year after graduation. Art Center often touts a number in the 90% range for employment of students 6 months after graduation, but that number includes ANY job, as opposed to an art-related position.
I loved my time at Art Center, and have enjoyed great success in my field, much of which I attribute to my time there. It is a sacrifice, but I loved every minute.
