Reasons to Attend
Comments about Harvard University:
I decided to attend Harvard, because, well, it's Harvard. I was deciding between Harvard and Columbia for a graduate program, and the two programs were equally "ranked", so ranking alone couldn't make my decision. My choice came down to the fact that I (along with many others) had always dreamed of attending Harvard; I had imagined myself among the ivy-covered brick buildings nestled along the Charles River, swapping witticisms with my super-smart classmates. Harvard has a brand and reputation that are difficult to surpass, and so it attracts many of the best: students, professors, funding streams, etc. I knew that a degree from Harvard would travel well (and I wanted to live overseas) and open doors. The exceptional thing is that Harvard excels in almost every field; many schools are known for particular programs, but Harvard is renowned across the board.
To top it off, Harvard was more generous with financial aid than my other option (and living expenses were a bit less in Cambridge than in NYC), so that clinched my decision. It was fate.
When I arrived, I realized that, despite the mystique, Harvard was just a school, albeit a great one; there wasn't a preppy, a cappella choir greeting me at the gates and nor were my days merely a golden haze of ivory tower privilege. And although some of my professors were legendary, they weren't necessarily interested in getting to know me personally or helping me figure out my life path. I certainly had Hollywood-influenced expectations of the place which would have been impossible to meet.
My biggest real complaint is that I sometimes felt like Harvard was in the business of churning out degrees. There are a lot of programs and the school knows that many people will do nearly anything to attend, and it sometimes felt impersonal--like Harvard just wants to accrue the largest alumni network to sustain its huge endowment.
All that being said, I don't regret choosing Harvard. I worked hard (and wrote a lot), learned more about what I did (and didn't) want to do in life, and fulfilled a life-long dream. And my degree has indeed opened doors and made me more credible in my field. And I was able to revel in the wider community of Harvard University, where the sheer number of learning opportunities outside of one's program (e.g., guest speakers, conferences and events) feels like drinking from a fire hose.
There are a couple of things I wish I had taken better advantage of while there: the ability to cross-register between graduate schools (e.g., a student at the business school can take classes at the education school) and the option to live in graduate school housing (I rented a place that was not affiliated with the school). And I wish I had learned to row on the Charles River...with a stirring soundtrack playing in the background, of course!
