AS in Interdisciplinary Studies
Who Should Take This Program?
If you need an associate’s degree to move your career ahead but haven’t found a degree program that fits your needs, this may be the program for you. This program is also an option for students who have already earned college-equivalent credit from a regionally or nationally accredited college and want to earn an associate’s degree. The objective of the Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree program is to prepare students for career advancement in a variety of fields with the knowledge, communication skills, critical thinking, and technical competencies required in the modern workplace. If you are interested in working with children or adolescents, or perhaps are considering a teaching certificate in the future, the ASIS degree’s Educational Paraprofessional emphasis area will provide you with the opportunity to pursue these options. The ASIS accommodates students whose needs are satisfied by an associate’s degree as well as those who may wish to pursue study beyond the associate’s degree level. For those students that have a particular interest in working with children in an educational setting, the Educational Paraprofessional emphasis area provides specific preparation in this field.
The Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree program consists of a minimum of 90 quarter credit hours.
Program Emphasis
The open concentration emphasis area can be a combination of courses from a variety of disciplines, while the Educational Paraprofessional emphasis is designed to provide students with the relevant knowledge and skills needed to be an effective paraprofessional in the classroom, child care center, or any other setting where instructional aides may be of assistance. With the recent adoption of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, as well as other federal legislation, the demand for highly qualified educators is increasing. Qualified aides are needed to work at the preschool, elementary, and high school levels. This also includes an increased need for teaching assistants in specialized areas such as bilingual and ESL education and special education. The Educational Paraprofessional emphasis area will prepare students for the more rigorous qualifications that are now required for these positions. Both options rest solidly on a general-education foundation, allowing students to plan their degree design in accordance with their employment or higher education objectives. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be awarded an associate of science degree.
An associate’s degree in interdisciplinary studies prepares you for entry-level employment and brings you at least halfway toward a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, many students who choose the Educational Paraprofessional emphasis area go on to pursue teaching certification after completion of the program. If, in the future, you should decide to complete your bachelor’s degree, Kaplan University can help you get there faster with its advanced start program options.
