The mission of Lycoming College is to offer students a distinguished education in the traditional liberal arts and sciences. The College has sought to accomplish that goal by gathering a strong faculty with a primary focus on teaching and a strong secondary focus on research. The College has established a teaching effectiveness program to focus on new strategies for the classroom including those involving the most recent technology. Lycoming features an extensive writing program for students in which they are expected to have a specific writing component in all their general education courses and to take an additional three courses designated as writing intensive. The College has encouraged student research across the curriculum with a particular focus in the sciences. Lycoming has also introduced capstone courses in most departments featuring an opportunity for students to bring their academic work together in some form of major research project or artistic presentation. In order to accomplish the close work between faculty and students required by our mission, the College has sustained a full time faculty at approximately ninety percent of the total faculty.
