Michigan Tech students create the future. Students in our Enterprise Program work with industry sponsors on projects such as wakeboard design, homeland security, WiFi, video games, international business, environmental sustainability, and nanotechnology. Programs such as Engineers Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, and Make A Difference Day positively impact communities here and around the globe. Students can choose from more than 120 programs in arts, humanities, and social sciences; business and economics; computing; engineering; environmental studies; sciences; and technology. We offer an excellent education in emergent fields such as computer network and system administration, pharmaceutical chemistry, sound design, bioinformatics, and exercise science. Many of our engineering programs rank in the top ten nationally in enrollment and degrees granted, and our technical communication program is among the nation’s largest. Outside of classrooms and labs, students enjoy our golf course, ski hill, trails and recreational forest, and small-town atmosphere in beautiful Upper Michigan. Our Winter Carnival features world-famous snow statues; and other annual celebrations include the Parade of Nations, with an international food festival; Keweenaw Day, an afternoon on Lake Superior’s shore; and Spring Fling, one last picnic before finals. \r\n

Comments about Michigan Technological University:
In 1995 after my junior year in high school, I participated in the "Summer Institutes" program up at Michigan Tech. It was a 2-week program designed to expose students to the variety of engineering programs offered, and also to give them a taste of life on a college campus. After only a few short days, I already felt at home. It was a beautiful campus, the exposure to technology was amazing, and the people running the program (current Michigan Tech students) were great! But one of the keys for me was the multiple research programs they exposed us to, showing what amazing things could be done. It wasn't just about learning math and science, it was about how you can make the world better utilizing your talents. I was shown research to improve little league catching equipment to protect against injury. I saw a research project to create mechanical legs that could help a handicapped person navigate stairs and other everyday obstacles they wouldn't be able to do in a wheelchair. Programs like that made me think that this school was about much more than simply getting you through your next chemistry class. When it came time to choose between colleges, it was easy for me to pick Michigan Tech.
As far as the education you get at Michigan Tech, there really is no substitute. They have a very good student to faculty ratio, many opportunities for getting involved in research projects with faculty, and some of the most amazing project groups you can think about getting involved in - and they look very good on a resume. Who would have thought you could make a canoe out of concrete? Or that you might be working on a Future Car based on solar power or a fuel cell? Or working on a project team in conjunction with a major corporation to develop a new piece of medical equipment? These are all experiences you can't have just anywhere - but there are more of them at Michigan Tech than I've heard of anywhere else.
The campus experience was unique and exceptional. The entire student body really felt like a family. Sometimes it was difficult to walk across campus to get to your next class because of everyone you wanted to say hello to! But what has really stuck with me is the sense of camaraderie generated by the students - in the dorms, in the degree programs, in the different activities you can find yourself participating in. It is a feeling of community that starts on campus and continues long after you graduate. My best friends today, many years later, are many of the same folks I sat in a computer lab working on a national design competition with. And after college, graduates from Michigan Tech just seem to stick together, from hosting broomball competitions in their own backyards, to trips back up to school for Winter Carnival, all the way to wanting to have your kids grow up together.
The bottom line is it is a great college that will prepare you very well for the path you choose as you graduate, both in education and in the community. There are many wonderful outdoor activities and a fun downtown to supplement your educational experience. The sports team are excellent competitors in their division, and it is a lot of fun to walk up the hill to the SDC in the winter and cheer on the hockey team. The university is on the cutting edge of technology and holds a lot of recognition in industry.
I've been at my current company for 10 years, and I've seen quite a few employees come and go in that time. There are great people from all the colleges. But overall, the ones who come from Michigan Tech just seem to get up to speed more quickly, have a deeper understanding of the details when solving a problem, and come up with the most innovative solutions. And every time I hear a new employee or co-op joining my group is from Michigan Tech... I feel a great sense of pride.
There may be several things I would change about decisions I've made in my life... but one thing I would never change is the decision I made to go to Michigan Tech and become a Husky. It was a great experience, and it continues on for many years after you toss your graduation cap up in the air. I can't imagine my life today without it.
