Reasons to Attend
Comments about Texas Christian University:
I attended TCU on a full-tuition scholarship. Both my Math and choir teachers in high school had recommended TCU as a good match for my diverse interests. When TCU recruiters liked my application enough to pay my way, that sealed the deal.
Money may have been the reason I went to TCU, but the people in that place were the reason I stayed. My first semester, I was terribly homesick. My academic advisor noticed my sad expression and went out of his way to talk to me about what I was experiencing. He convinced me to stay "one more semester" to see if my feelings changed.
TCU is a place where professors are rewarded not for publishing obscure findings in even more obscure trade journals. No, tenure and other awards are granted based on student evaluations of their teaching abilities. It's a place where freshmen hang out with department chairs, where office hours are 24/7, and student-teacher conferences are as likely to be conducted over pie and ice cream as in a professor's office.
It is also a place where wise teachers recognize how insecure we are about our "life choices" when we are 18. Core requirements force ballet majors to study chemistry, and physics majors to take at least one course in theater or music.
As a result, many of us learned that what we thought we were good at turned out not to be our passion after all. Chemistry majors graduate with degrees in journalism, and pianists fall in love with mathematics. Real life examples from among my circle of friends.
And surrounding all this, an unrelenting push to teach physicists, pianists, chemists, and nurses to write, to communicate, to say what we mean in clear and unmistakable language.
The newly revived football team is simply icing on the cake. Most of us would have attended TCU even if the school could not win a single game. It's that great a place to learn. And grow.
