Comments about University of California:
I selected this school for it's water polo and swimming programs, as well as it's academics. I loved that each college within the UCSD system had it's own requirements and 'feel.' It provided a smaller, more intimate, community within a massive institution. The classes are great, the professors are extremely knowledgable, and the social activities are adequate. If you're looking for a party school, head down the road to another SD school. If you're looking for an education from a University that is setting the bar and leading the way in both Science and Technology, then head to America's Finest City, and become a Triton!
Pros
- Affordable tuition
- Friendly people
- Great instructors
- Number of degree offerings
- Safe city
Cons
- Growing city
- Little nightlife

Comments about University of California:
I came to UC Davis originally accepted into undergrad under the degree of computer science. I graduated 7 years ago. I had a great time meeting others in the dorms. The dorms were decent (some rowdier than others) and the food wasn't too bad. If you're a California resident, the tuition is very reasonable.
After my first semester I found that I wasn't liking my chosen degree much. I struggled in my classes and despite having all the assistance I could need, it just wasn't for me. I switched over to Japanese and Communications as a double major. While I think job-wise I might have been better off sticking with computer science, it took a lot of stress off me to switch and my grades quickly turned around, back to the A's I was used to getting.
My professors were great and offered one on one office hours for any students that needed more assistance. Some of the classrooms were crowded, but never so crowded that there weren't enough seats for everyone.
The campus is large but you can get anywhere quickly by bike; bike is the main form of transportation you'll see in Davis. If you want to go to Sacramento or Vacaville for shopping or fun, you'll definitely need a car. Davis is kind of a sleepy town, although they are expanding every day. When I attended UC Davis, there were only a few things to do: Bowling at the student center or see a movie in town at one of the two theaters. It's a very safe town, there's just not much nightlife as it is.
When I first came to Davis, I was kind of iffy. While there I dated a guy from my dorm; we continued dating after UC Davis and are now married. Now that we're gone, we still miss Davis and have many great memories there of the restaurants we ate in that may or may not still exist, the walks and bike rides we had on Davis streets, and the ever wonderful Picnic Day they hold every year.
