The University of Chicago offers a distinctive academic experience for college students. As one of the nation’s leading research universities, there is a high value placed on serious academic work, but the atmosphere in which it is accomplished is singularly Chicago. Here, scholars and students are engaged in rigorous and creative inquiry, in spirited debate that pries open old dogmas and penetrates conventional wisdom. \r\n\r\nIt is this climate of openness and creativity that attracts exceptional students and faculty from around the globe, including the current President of the United States, not to mention a total of 82 Nobel laureates and counting. \r\n\r\nBeyond the vast educational resources of the University is Chicago itself, a city that offers a wealth of world-class arts, architecture, museums and more, in addition to miles of magnificent lakefront beaches and parks.\r\n

Reasons to Attend
Comments about University of Chicago:
I attended the U of Chicago for graduate school in the sciences, even though I had been counseled against it by friends at work--no one outside of the Midwest (barring a few disciplines like economics and law) knows anything at all about this school.
I received exceptional intellectual training in my discipline. However, I earned this training at the cost of being ground into mental and emotional hamburger.
The problem is that the U of Chicago considers itself one of the finest schools in the world (which, for undergrad, I'd believe), and at the graduate level on a par with the best in the US and UK schools. The faculty treated their graduate students accordingly--like a side of beef, to be pummeled repeatedly, aged through neglect, and eventually ground up. While this is true of many of the top US science graduate schools, the general lack of cachet associated with the U of Chicago "brand" means that it's not worth it, on the whole.
If you're one of the few who a) can deal with the grind, and b) land a lab position with one of the big names at Chicago, then I can recommend it. Otherwise, there are better places to spend 4-7 years of your life.
