According to the school, the University of Portland, Oregon’s Catholic university, has received several national faculty awards from the Carnegie Foundation in recent years, among them the U.S. Professor of the Year (2000) and three Oregon Professor of the Year honors. Its faculty and students have earned many Fulbright, Marshall, Mitchell, and Goldwater fellowships, and have received both the Oregon’s Governor’s Award for more than 10,000 hours of volunteer service annually and Washington Monthly magazine’s national top ranking for service to the nation. The University is renowned for its extensive study-abroad programs (in Asia, Australia, Latin America, and Europe), its award-winning cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship program, its innovative education, biology, and theater programs, its state-of-the-art nursing and science laboratories, and its booming global business and environmental ethics majors— the latter the only one of its kind in the U.S. The University also sponsors a creative center for freshman support, savors its NCAA national champion woman’s soccer team (twice in four years), and has been dedicated for more than a century to creating a campus community where ‘teachable moments’ in and out of the classroom are not only prized but the true epiphanies sparking lifelong learning.
