According to the school, the University of Tulsa is a private, mid-size, selective university with an 11-to-1 students to faculty ratio. Personalized challenges, student achievement and leadership in computer security programs (where TU produces a disproportionate number of doctorates) are TU hallmarks. Comments about University of Tulsa:
If you're one of those guys (like I was) who is fretting over not being able to get into a top tier law school, read this and be of good cheer. It doesn't matter. You can still get a great education and get a good job.
I chose Tulsa because it was the only dang school that wanted me, but they also offered me a small scholarship.
PROS: teachers are good. Most of them don't blow you away, but they definitely know their stuff and they are very approachable.
This is actually a really good time to go to TU law, or TU in general for that matter. When I was there (2008), TU really started focusing hard on improving their law school ranking and dropped tons of money into renovating the law school building (long overdue). It's going to be state of the art when it's finished. The library, finished in 2006, was already one of the best around, top notch. TU has already improved its ranking and will only be getting better.
Study abroad program: awesome! It cost me an arm and a leg, but I don't regret a minute of it. TU Law's study abroad program is literally one of the best in the country. It attracts students from all over the country and has offerings throughout Europe, and I believe they have one in China now.
Cons: tuition cost, but that's not just TU's problem, it's all law schools. You're not going to find a cheap law school out there, so this isn't just a knock on Tulsa.
Grading curve was horrible. Most of my classmates walked out of there with a C+ average. After years of complaining, there were rumors that the administration was going to change it, but who knows.
Bottom line: great education. I actually did my last year at the University of Utah law school as a visitor. Even though the U of U is rated much higher than Tulsa, I can guarantee you the education isn't any better. Do your best, get good grades and you'll get a job with a Tulsa degree as well as anyone with a degree from a "better" school.
