I'm a graduate of the U's Communication department (PR/Journalism). As one of many local "commuter" students, my time spent at the U was almost strictly spent studying or in class - not a lot of extracurricular social activity, although it was always available in abundance.
I received a quality education and enjoyed my time there as a student. The PROs definitely outweighed the CONs, and most of the CONs were things that most growing universities face: crowded classrooms, difficulty finding parking (especially given the "commuter school" moniker).
Exciting times are ahead for the U, especially if you're a fan of athletics. Joining Colorado as the newest members of the now Pac-12, U sports, in particular football and basketball, should become even more exciting and build on the strengthening pageantry and momentum they've been enjoying over recent years (BSC Busters!!!).
For scenery, you can't beat the location. Nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch mountains, the location lends itself to some great all-season outdoor activity (skiing, biking, hiking, fishing...). Weather varies, but typically you get all four seasons. Cold, snowy winters. Hot-but-pleasant summers.

I selected this school for location. It was convenient for me because I lived in Salt Lake City. Also, being set at the foothills of the mountains provides a gorgeous setting, although most of the buildings are outdated and relatively ugly. Many students at Utah are idiots, but some are very smart. If you are smart and want to really shine, Utah is a great option. It has all the degree options you could ask for, and you will have very little competition. Also, if you are not smart and just want to get by, this could really work for you because people like you are a dime a dozen on this campus. Some instructors are awesome and incredibly well qualified (e.g. Brad Rock for Sports Writing or Dan Bammes for Radio) and some are borderline idiots fresh out of some podunk masters program. The football team is awesome and there are some beautiful girls, but there are also some smelly hippies and an awful track team.

Comments about University of Utah:
The U of U caught my attention during the Cold Fusion fiasco of '89. But after a closer look, its strong physical analytical chemistry program -- and extra-curricular perks like skiing, biking, and river running -- brought me here for grad school. I took the leap, and have never regretted it. Now I'm a Utah transplant for life. Don't settle for less than the best!

Comments about University of Utah:
Utahs Engineering College provided a great education to begin a career in Civil Engineering. Upper Level classes were pertinent to real world experience. General Education was varied with many great classes to choose. Athletic events were great, though I am jealous now that they are in the Pac-10.

Comments about University of Utah:
The U of U is a great State funded institution. This is also it's drawback - reliance on State funding. It has some amazing programs - those that are able to generate huge private grants and endowments - The School of Business, The Law School, The Medical School. For those Colleges that must rely on tuition and general funding, programs can become rather precarious - and left to the budget tide. This in turn can bring about changes in programs that may not be in the best interest of students and their preparation for the future.
Word of caution - check on frequency with which required courses are offered, check on credentials of adjunct faculty and their reviews, and check on stability of programs.

Comments about University of Utah:
I have really enjoyed my time at the University of Utah and would recommend the university to a friend. The teachers can be a hit a miss, some are exceptional, some are terrible. I feel like once I chose my major and got into the program classroom and staff interactions became more personal. Overall my experience has been positive.

Comments about University of Utah:
I selected it at first by chance...it isn't in Logan and isn't BYU, but after attending the U for a semester I fell in love with it. The campus is beautiful and accessible. The class sizes are great. The professors are great. I spoke with many of my professors when I was trying to figure out what to major in (the 3 times or so that I changed it) and they always listened and provided insightful direction. I made many friends that I still keep in touch with. I was able to work for the U and eventually qualified for receive half off tuition, which I loved. The U is definitely more of a commuter school so not everyone is living right on campus but there are still plenty of social opportunities to meet people through school sponsored events.
One of the things I loved the most...the anthropology building. It is beautiful and full of character outside and in. That was my last "major" switch and what I graduated in. The anthropology building, classes, professors, students, tiny computer lab and the dog that lives in it... all these things just made me feel at home.

Comments about University of Utah:
I chose to attend the University of Utah because of a pilot program being offered to high school students to attend and earn college credit early. One could say, the largest chemical reaction ever seen at the U of U may have been a 16-year old in Chemistry 101.
Liking my college experience, I chose to stay at the U of U and spent the next four vibrant years completing coursework for a Bachelors degree with an emphasis in Marketing. While gaining an excellent education, the rather large class sizes prepared me well for social scenes like football games and the coffee machine lines in the Union building. Giving credit where credit is due, I received the necessary skills to become gainfully employed with my first J-O-B with not a stitch of real world experience. All thanks to my shinny new business degree, which continues to serve me well, even after 20 years. And, I had some fun too along the way.
I started as a Running Ute and ended up as a Ute during my time at the U of U, but one thing remains unchangeable…I am proud to be an University of Utah graduate and I would recommend the school to anyone interested in a top notch education accompanied with some fun experiences along the way, perfect for life.

Comments about University of Utah:
My degree was well worth the time. I felt that I got a well-rounded education, and had extra support during my senior year. The instructors went the extra mile to help finish my degree. This was over forty years ago, and I'm sure higher education is even more beneficial.

Comments about University of Utah:
It can provide a great, American college experience, but the majority of the students commute. If you want to enjoy sports, social life, community service, study groups, and student groups as much as you can, move into the dorms, near by, or join the Greek system.
