Queens College

At its founding in 1937, Queens College was hailed by the people of the borough as “the college of the future.” Now part of the City University of New York (CUNY), The college continues to offer a rigorous education in the liberal arts and sciences that prepares students to become leaders in our global society. A longtime member of Phi Beta Kappa, Queens College has one of the most diverse student populations in America, with students from more than 150 nations. The faculty of prominent, award-winning scholars is dedicated to both scholarship and teaching, and often includes students in their research projects. For these reasons, Queens College offers an unusually rich education. Located in a residential area of Flushing, Queens, the beautiful campus consists of 77 acres lined with trees surrounding grassy open spaces and a traditional quad. The college boasts state-of-the-art computer and science labs, a spectacular music building, and the six-story Rosenthal Library. The major classroom building, Powdermaker Hall, has been renovated with the latest technology. The college opened its first residence hall, The Summit, in 2009. However, because most students commute, the administration is committed to making the college a “home-away-from-home” with over 100 student clubs and a full athletics program. In fact, Queens is the only CUNY college that participates in Division II sports. Academic programs are organized into four divisions, which offer both day and evening courses: Arts and Humanities; Mathematics and the Natural Sciences; the Social Sciences; and Education. The college has over 100 undergraduate and graduate majors, including a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with majors in finance, international business, and actuarial studies. Programs have also recently been added in the Classics, Chinese, Graphic Design, Neuroscience, and Risk Management. The college offers several interdisciplinary programs, including divisional honors programs in the humanities, math and natural sciences, and social sciences. In addition, Queens College participates in the CUNY Macaulay Honors College, which offers free tuition and other benefits. The college’s centers and institutes serve students and the larger urban community by addressing society’s most important challenges, including cancer, AIDS, pollution, and racism. The arts thrive on campus, thanks to the Kupferberg Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, which brings together the college’s academic departments in the arts (Music, Drama, Art, and Media Studies) and its museums (the Godwin-Ternbach, the Queens College Art Center, and the Louis Armstrong House Museum).
