John Carroll University

John Carroll is a private, coeducational, Catholic and Jesuit university providing programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and business at the undergraduate level and in selected areas at the master’s level. As a Jesuit Catholic university, John Carroll inspires individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world. Academically, we stress that each individual is important and students must be given focused, caring, personal attention. Students are challenged to pursue wisdom, competence, psychological maturity, spiritual strength, ethical grounding and social and global awareness. The hallmark of this person-centered reality of Jesuit, liberal arts education is that it must always lead to action. Students are encouraged to use their knowledge and abilities in service to the world; to make a difference for others. The Boler School of Business consistently ranks in the top 10 business schools in the Midwest and is AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredited — a prestigious distinction that is only awarded to the top 10-12% of business schools nationally. Outside of the classroom, 1,500 members of the JCU community performed more than 13,000 hours of community service during the academic year. In February 2009, John Carroll was one of 23 Jesuit institutions nationally recognized for involvement in community service by The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Saint Johns Bible — the first handwritten and hand-illuminated Bible in 500 years — debuted at John Carroll in April 2008 for permanent display in the Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center. A survey of the Class of 2008 that had a 56% response rate indicated that, within nine months of graduation, nearly all graduates were employed full-time, enrolled in full-time graduate programs, or fulfilling a year of service commitment. Our distinguished faculty includes 210 full-time members, 94% of whom hold doctoral degrees or the terminal degree in their field. In addition, 78% of them are tenured; 13% are on a tenure track; 9% are visiting professors. Ninety percent of them have published books, articles or have received research grants in the past two years. Our student/teacher ratio is 15:1.
