Since its founding in the 1870s, Rhode Island School of Design has earned a reputation as the preeminent art and design college in this country. With over 18,000 alumni, an endowment of over $200 million, and 525 faculty who are outstanding artists, designers, architects – RISD enrolls 1,930 undergraduates and 420 graduate students in majors encompassing the fine arts, design and architecture. RISD’s mission is embodied in the original charter statement from 1877: To instruct artisans in drawing, painting, modeling, designing so that they may apply the principles of art, to train students in the practice of art that they may give instruction to others, or become artists themselves, and to support the general advancement of public art education by the exhibition of works of art and of art school studies and by lectures on art.
