Salem State University offers our students a challenging and supportive living and learning environment. With a 14 to 1 undergraduate student to faculty ratio, student learning opportunities are personal and collaborative, yet large enough to broaden students’ understanding of their world. The university’s students hail from 27 states and 57 countries. Salem State has over 100 student groups and clubs, 17 varsity teams along with intramural sports, and hundreds of students activities scheduled throughout the year. The university has a nationally award winning residence life program and 70 percent of our freshmen class live on campus. When asked about their experiences at the university in a recent survey, students attribute their success to the relationships they have with faculty and administrators.\r\n\r\nSalem State is comprised of three undergraduate schools (the School of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Human Services and the Bertolon School of Business), the School of Graduate Studies and the Division of Continuing Education, and offers bachelors and masters degrees as well as certificates of advanced graduate studies and area-specific licenses. Salem State’s top undergraduate majors include: business administration, nursing, education, criminal justice, biology, psychology, communications, sport and movement science, English, and history. The university’s liberal arts model prepares students to think critically, communicate effectively and ready themselves to fulfill the demands of tomorrow’s changing work force. They are assisted in this endeavor by a highly credentialed faculty, 70 percent of whom hold terminal degrees or the equivalent, including nine recent Fulbright Scholars. \r\n\r\nSome unique programs: Theatre and Speech Communication ’ is the only public college program in New England to be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre. A ‘hands-on’ theatre program, it provides students with personal interaction with professionally trained faculty and staff. Alumni place well in graduate schools, conservatories, regional theatres and in the professional world. Salem State Theatre has won numerous national and regional awards with our involvement in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. In the past 18 years, Salem State Theatre has had nine students represent New England at The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival; three of have won the national Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. We are one of only two colleges or universities to have had three national winners.\r\n\r\nGeography/Geo-Information Sciences ’ Salem State’s digital geography laboratory is a unique facility dedicated to geo-spatial computing research and education. Geo-information Science is the study of geo-spatial applications and technologies that help improve decision making and make possible the acquisition, analysis and visualization of spatial data. Graduates of this program are securing jobs in a variety of industries including homeland security, criminal justice, natural resource management, and urban and transportation planning.\r\n\r\nNursing ’ offers several different undergraduate, graduate and certificate degrees and admission to this program is among the most sought after. Visit any hospital in the greater Boston area and you will find Salem State nursing graduates at work. They are in demand because the School of Nursing has imbued them with high standards and given them the ability to stay on the leading edge of nursing education. Included in this training is the university’s state-of-the-art Peter and Carolyn Lynch Laboratory for Nursing and Occupational Therapy.\r\n
