According to the school, Southern Virginia University is the only institution of its kind: a private liberal-arts college in a Latter-day Saint environment. Gospel principles are at the center of everything we do. The university sponsors firesides and weekly devotionals, and classroom discussions are informed not only by textbooks and the best of secular thinking but also by scripture and the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.\r\n\r\nOur basic educational model is decidedly old-fashioned: we match highly qualified instructors with small classes and have them work together to understand important books, challenging concepts and insightful theories. Our core curriculum focuses on the study of great human accomplishments in the letters, arts and sciences. Our students study Greek, Roman and European works that helped lay the foundation upon which our modern political, economic, scientific and artistic thinking is based. Students at Southern Virginia learn how to think critically, analyze information rigorously and communicate effectively.\r\n\r\n
