Interdisciplinary programs, challenging courses, and a supportive environment enable students to grow as responsible, healthy, and productive citizens in service to others. Courses of study are designed to prepare young men and women for success in human-helping fields that enhance society and improve quality of life, especially for those in need. In the classroom, the Humanics philosophy translates into a careful balance of theory and practice?the daily application of education that connects people to people. \r\n\r\nDegrees are offered in 40 undergraduate and 14 graduate major areas of study, including doctoral degrees in physical education and physical therapy. Major areas of study are in health sciences, human and social services, sport management and movement studies, and the arts and sciences. The academic experience encompasses coursework, research, laboratory experience, and targeted fieldwork enhanced by cocurricular and voluntary service activities on campus and in the community. \r\n\r\nThe newly renovated Schoo Science Center, which opened in January 2007, is a state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory facility for science education?which over 85 percent of undergraduates take to complete their academic major or minor?and for enhancement of scientific research and discovery, better preparing the nation?s future scientific leaders. \r\n\r\nOutstanding athletics and recreation facilities promote the College???s athletic heritage and a campus-wide wellness initiative that reflects the balance of spirit, mind, and body. The facilities include a six-lane, 50-meter pool; a three-level, multi-purpose, 2,000-seat arena with indoor jogging track; two teaching gymnasiums with handball/racquetball courts; eight tennis courts; two new multi-purpose fields surfaced with state-of-the-art synthetic turf; football field with synthetic turf; baseball and softball fields; indoor batting cages; an eight-lane outdoor track; weight room; climbing wall; aerobics room; and a wellness center offering personal training, assessment, and record keeping.\r\n\r\nCommunity volunteerism is more than just an extracurricular activity for students. The College is committed to being part of, and not apart from, the surrounding communities, and this presents students and faculty with opportunities to combine academic training with efforts to give back to the community and address unmet needs. In 2006, the College received $3.62 million to more than quadruple its AmeriCorps volunteer program. As a result, greater numbers of student volunteers can serve as academic coaches for underperforming schoolchildren, and counselors and health case managers for uninsured and underinsured persons. \r\n
