According to the school, Washington College was founded under the patronage of George Washington and was the first college chartered in the new nation. Within a traditional liberal arts setting, approximately 1300 students benefit from intensively interactive education with opportunities for undergraduate research, internships, creative projects, and study abroad. Its setting in the Chesapeake Bay watershed facilitates studies in history, biology, chemistry, and environmental studies. Washington College offers a behavioral neuroscience program, as well as the nation’s largest undergraduate literary prize. Washington’s legacy is reflected today in the Washington Scholars program – $50,000 merit scholarship recognizing the promise of leadership.
