Reasons to Attend
Comments about George Washington University:
When I was a couple of years out of college I decided to pursue a Master's Degree. I had decided I did not want to continue my education in the same engineering field I had got my undergraduate degree in, for various reasons. I also decided I didn't want to be like everyone else and just get an MBA. I was also interested in finding a good distance or online program because I didn't want to pause my career. But I didn't want to go with one of the generic "online universities". I wanted my degree to hold weight after all the effort I would need to put into it.
I found the Project Management Distance program at George Washington University to be a perfect fit! Here was a world-renowned university that offered a very detailed and interactive online Master's program. The program was in the school of business and had some elements of an MBA, but was focused on Project Management, which allows you to stay much closer to the work being done.
They had a great kickoff - you were required to come out to the university in Washington DC for an orientation program, meet the professors you would be learning with over the years, and learn the best practices for being successful in an online program. And being at school right in the heart of the nation's capital really helped you feel a sense of pride.
I was very impressed at the resume of the professors I would be working with. There were no T.A.s, it was always a professor. And these were the people who wrote the articles in the journals about the science of project management. I would be learning from the experts in the field that I was studying.
One thing that amazed me throughout the degree program was the availability of the professors and the interaction with them during the classes. They didn't look at the online classes they were teaching as supplemental work, or as an annoyance, they put a lot of effort and importance on them. It was not a "buy-a-degree" program - you had to learn and work in it, and the professors were right there with you.
They also required groups of students to work together virtually, mimicking the real world in today's global economy. Some of my projects required management of our work across time zones from Utah to DC to Iraq. It was a great teaching mechanism and was one of the many little touches that made the whole experience so worthwhile.
To cap off your degree, you spend a week on campus at the end of your final class. The entire class is assigned a project to work together in groups, to write sections of a book on a project management topic. By the end, members of the class have essentially become experts in a specific field, which you can use right away if looking for a new occupation.
And as for graduation, there's something to be said for going through the ceremony right on the National Mall. There aren't many other places you can have that experience.
I was very happy with my choice to join the George Washington family and further my education and experience through their distance program.
