Being 'just a community college' lots of people my overlook Salt Lake Community College in favor of a higher-profile institution. What you'd be forgetting, though, is that you only have to COMPLETE your degree at one of the higher-profile institutions. Go to SLCC to get your generals out of the way, and then transfer them to your school of choice.
But don't think you'd be compromising your education for the sake of price. Some of my best college experiences happened here. One my first courses was History 1100 at SLCC. This class ("Understanding History", I think it was called) taught me more about how to research and learn than any other course I've taken. The whole point of the course was to write a paper based only on primary sources (as opposed to second-hand information). Combine that focus with the intelligence, charisma, and passion of the teacher, and you get one hell of an education.

In my opinion, Salt Lake City Community College has several pros and cons. While the tuition is considerably low, you get what you pay for. I have had some pretty lousy professors and some very amazing, well read, prepared professors too.
One thing I didn't like was the age difference in classrooms. I am twenty-five years old and often sit next to sixteen year-olds who are taking these classes for advanced high school credit. While that is admirable, the atmosphere is often clouded by the lack of maturity these younger students have. Professors tend to cater to the lesser informed (usually, but not always, the younger students) - Which can be great if you are a member of that party, but it can be annoying to those who are prepared to further their education and learn things than come merely for credit. The class sizes are small, so it is fairly obvious who is there because they want to be there and those that don't. Classes are always better when students have the same goal: To be educated and learn.
Professors are always ready to help students out of class time. I currently attend SLCC and I have a Spanish teacher who calls me when I don't attend class or if she has a question about my work. She has called me as early as 9:00 am and as late as 10:30 pm - and she does this with all of the students! She cares what happens to her students, works with them and wants them to succeed. However, not all teachers are as involved in their students welfare, but they will always work with you to help you achieve your goal.
I would recommend this school if it was for a temporary basis. I think there are better schools out there, but for general ed classes, it can be a good starting point.

Comments about Salt Lake Community College:
I have attended Salt Lake Community College, on and off, for a number of years. And, what do I have to say about it other than - it is a Community College.
SLCC offers a large number of courses, ranging from standard 2 year academic prep courses in Accounting to Math to Sociology, to specific career path programs in Air Conditioning all the way to Yoga instruction. If you want to study it, SLCC probably has it.
However, being a community college, it has its fair share of adjunct part-time faculty. I have had a handful of instructors who should not be allowed to teach folks how to tie a shoe, let alone History or Biology. . . However, to be fair - I have also had some PHENOMENAL professors, as well. One prof, in particular, is probably one of the brightest people I know. But, I am afraid those are overshadowed by the part-time folk.
Overall, SLCC is great at what it does. It is a place for students who want a post secondary education, on the cheap, and at their convenience. I would recommend it as a starting point for students who may be a bit skeptical of higher education.
Pros

Comments about Salt Lake Community College:
At the time I came to SLCC, it was the only school in the state offering a degree in Sign Language Interpreting. So, since that was my major, the decision to come here wasn't very hard to make. The education I received at SLCC prepared me for my career and for the real world.
Pros
- Affordable tuition
- Online classes
- Provided personal attention
Cons
- Crowded classrooms

Comments about Salt Lake Community College:
When I attended, the design program had some great, knowledgeable, and experienced instructors. The projects were tailored to provide experience that could be applied in the field, and the class sizes were not so large that I always had time to get great feedback from my instructors. There were opportunities to compete in design competitions and lots of education on practical theory and technique. I recommend it highly if you are looking to get a great start in the design industry or want to transfer to a school for more education.

Comments about Salt Lake Community College:
For the most pat, I liked the school, other than I had to run around to different locations all over the valley. I tried to take an online course which I FAILED, but not for trying. The teacher was really hard to get a hold of and not helpful at all (to a beginners learning the computer.. program) By the time, the system and codes from the books were all in order and figured out (it took me weeks) I was super behind. When I tried to chat with the teacher the times he said he would be there, he wasnt. It was RIDICULOUS.

Comments about Salt Lake Community College:
I used SLCC as a way to pick up classes that the University of Utah offered at inconvenent times or for some of the weed out classes like Organic Chemistry and Physics. This was a great way to get into a smaller class (30 students vs. 200+). There are multiple campuses around town and they cater to the non-traditional student. I didn't put a lot of effort into getting to know my professors, but they seemed nice enough. They also offer an array of online classes that make it a great alternative to sitting in a classroom.

Comments about Salt Lake Community College:
I loved my experience at SLCC (Redwood Road Campus). After high school I wasn't quite ready for the full college experience. SLCC was the perfect introductory.
The class sizes are small which is perfect if you aren't ready for the "big" college experience yet. The teacher's are passionate and have real world experience.
The only drawn back is that your class selection is smaller. At a large university you might get to choose from 4 different types of Anthropolgy classes, at SLCC you would only have Anthro 101.
