Texas Tech University is in the midst of the most exciting time in the school-s history. As we embark on becoming the state-s next national research university, the opportunities for students could not be greater.\r\n\r\nWe are proud to be one of the leading institutions in Texas vying for Tier One research status with the help of a $425 million National Research University Fund approved by voters in November. \r\n\r\nWe are also educating more students than ever, as we posted record enrollments for the past two years; last fall more than 30,000 students attended classes – the most in school history – and we anticipate breaking that record again this fall as both our undergraduate and graduate numbers continue to grow.\r\n\r\nYet despite this growth, Texas Tech has retained the feel of a cozy liberal arts institution. Our students enjoy one-on-one interactions with faculty in a safe and traditional campus atmosphere that offers all the benefits of a major research university.\r\n\r\nFor example, in the past year, Texas Tech-s faculty and students chased tornadoes across the Midwest as part of the nation-s biggest meteorological manhunt. They pinpointed the meteorite that may have killed the dinosaurs, and played a role in powering up the world-s largest particle collider deep beneath the Swiss Alps.\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, Texas Tech is one of only three universities in Texas to boast a chapter of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Our chapter received the society-s highest possible rating for 2008-2009 and is in consideration for the Exemplary Chapter Award that Phi Beta Kappa will present to three schools in 2012.\r\n\r\nEstablished in 1923, Texas Tech sits on a 1,840-acre campus that features expansive lawns, impressive landscaping and Spanish Renaissance-style architecture. It is located in Lubbock, Texas – a thriving city of more than 218,000 people that is the economic and medical hub of a 26-county region larger than most states. \r\n\r\nThe university offers more than 150 bachelor-s degrees, 100 master-s degrees and 50 doctoral degree choices. Plus, as part of the Texas Tech University System, Texas Tech shares the same campus with its sister university the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. The close proximity makes Texas Tech the only institution in the state with undergraduate and graduate schools, a law school and medical school all on the same campus, which facilitates the transition to professional studies. \r\n\r\nWorried about getting swallowed up in the crowd? Don-t. Lubbock is large enough to offer many of the same shopping, dining and opportunities you-d find in larger Texas cities such as Dallas or Houston, yet has a friendly and college-focused atmosphere that will make you feel welcome to become a part of the community.\r\n
