According to the school, founded in 1848, The University of Mississippi is a public, comprehensive, research institution that offers what many have called the ideal educational experience. With just under 14,500 students on our beautifully landscaped Oxford campus (over 18,000 including our Medical Center in Jackson and other locations), the university brings together the best that a public university offers while still providing the qualities most often found at expensive private colleges. Professors teach students in small classes that often average 40 or less. More importantly, we have an impressive track record of success in student outcomes. In the past seven years, 100 percent of the graduates of our accountancy and pharmacy graduate programs landed jobs; undergraduates were accepted to medical school at a rate nearly twice the national average; and 93 percent of graduating students ranked their educational experience as excellent or good. Our research programs in acoustics, atmospheric physics, health care, remote sensing, Southern studies, space law and pharmaceutical sciences are not only renowned internationally but also delivering real-world solutions to problems faced by our state, nation and world. Our Croft Institute for International Studies, Lott Leadership Institute and Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College are unsurpassed at even the Ivy League schools. On the Oxford campus, the University offers more than 100 majors in the College of Liberal Arts and professional schools of Accountancy, Applied Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Journalism, Pharmacy and Law. The Academic Support Center helps students without declared majors and supports students in health professions programs and pre-professional tracks. Outside the classroom, students can choose to get involved in more than 250 student organizations, including service, student government, honorary, professional, Greek, religious, visual and performing arts, political, special interest and international. They attend lectures by renowned speakers and enjoy world-class musical and theatrical performances at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts. Students also run a daily newspaper, radio and TV station, and they like to participate in sports and recreation. Offerings include a fitness center and classes, natatorium, intramurals and sports clubs, newly renovated golf course and a 10-acre outdoor sports complex with zip lining and wall climbing. They also go on skiing, hiking, rafting and other adventure trips sponsored by Ole Miss Outdoors. Health services, physical therapy, counseling services and around-the-clock crisis services are available to students, and for off-campus entertainment, the downtown Oxford Square is a popular destination for shopping, dining and live music. The University of Mississippi ranks among the safest college campuses in the nation.
