According to the school, as a campus of the University of North Carolina system, Western Carolina University provides outstanding opportunities for students in a supportive living-learning environment that encourages interaction with faculty, participation in organized community service activities and preparation for future careers. In 2008, WCU adopted a new quality enhancement plan as part of its successful effort to earn re-accreditation from the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. The plan is a framework for helping students become engaged and intentional in their own educations by encouraging them to reflect on how their classroom experience connects to what they learn outside the classroom and how everything in their university experience connects to their career and life goals. SACS reviewers expressed enthusiastic approval for the plan and urged the university to move forward with it. At the same time, faculty adopted a new tenure policy that rewards professors for using their scholarly expertise to address the needs of the region. The policy adds a new dimension to the traditional evaluation of faculty on the quality of their teaching and research. In response to increased student enrollment and changes in academic programs, the university was restructured, creating a new College of Fine and Performing Arts and a new College of Health and Human Sciences. WCU also encompasses an Honors College; Kimmel School of Construction Management and Technology; and the colleges of Business, Arts and Sciences, and Education and Allied Professions. Students continue to give WCU high marks on the National Survey of Student Engagement. In nearly all measures of student engagement, WCU is above its peers. Among its first-year students, WCU performed better on all five benchmarks than its peers and was ranked significantly better than the NSSE national average on active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction and supportive campus environment. Among seniors, WCU performed significantly better than its peers and the NSSE cohort on active and collaborative learning and student-faculty interaction. In 2008, WCU opened a $16.7 million, 73,000-square-foot Campus Recreation Center. A $17.6 million dining hall will open in fall 2009, as well as the first of two adjoining residence halls, a combined $50.2 million project. In accordance with plans to develop its Millennial Initiative, a 344-acre project that doubles the size of campus, WCU is moving forward with a new $46.2 million health and gerontological sciences building. It will house educational and outreach programs as well as state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms for nursing, social work, physical therapy, athletic training, environmental health, health information administration, nutrition and dietetics, emergency medical care, recreational therapy and communication sciences and disorders. For the past four years, WCU students have ranked in the top 10 at the prestigious annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research, consistently leading the way among UNC institutions. In 2009, WCU became one of only 83 institutions nationally named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Reasons to Attend
Comments about Western Carolina University:
I selected Western Carolina University because it is close to home, rather small, and it has the Journalism major. It was also more cheap than some of my other, closer options. I like WCU because it has some really great professors, like the authors Pamela Duncan, Ron Rash, and Hal Herzog. It is also located in a rural area close to downtown Sylva. The work is a bit easy, but to compensate for that, you have to maintain a high GPA to secure an internship. There are programs that get freshmen more involved in the school, and programs for older students, and various clubs like Gaming, and Anime. Western participates in exchange programs with foreign colleges that offer to teach students in english, at the same, or lower rates than at the main campus. Financial aid is offered for student exchange, and is provided to a lot of Western's populace if you get the Fafsa in early enough. There is also a theater in the University center wit $2 admission for students, which shows new movies a few months after they've shown in regular theaters. There are also rooms in the UC that have hosted concerts by Vanessa Carlton, We the Kings, and Ryan Cabrera. There are also concerts held in the Ramsey Center, where students can get a great deal on tickets. The cafeteria food is okay, but the on campus restaurants (Including Panda Express,a sushi bar, McCallister's and Starbucks.) are your best bet. There are food stores on campus, but it is cheaper to go across the street to Bob's Mini Mart, The campus is great, if you don't want to leave it to go shop, or expect to do much of anything except hiking on the weekends. There are a lot of volunteering initiatives on campus, for the community. If you pick a school based on its football team, you won't be coming here. And while the school is "Green", and there are plans for a new campus, building refurbishment, a shopping center, and even incorporation as a college town, do not be fooled as to who will be footing the bill. The tuition rises yearly and is reaching the $17,000 mark for in-state students. Included in that bill is a fee for rental books that is less than $300, and funding for a writing center to help with papers, a math tutoring center,a group tutoring center, IT, and online tutoring. You'll often get extra credit for using these centers, and they are a real help/GPA boost. Despite all of the great entertainment options and opportunities for immersion, there is a general consensus among students that the financial aid office is rather bad at its job. From offering little to no assistance in navigating its website for incoming students, to giving you the run around when trying to answer your questions, to trying to unfairly revoke financial aid, it seems like they only make your life harder before they make things clear. But if you like the thought of award wining programs, good professors, and good entertainment in a peaceful setting, Western might just be for you. My best advice is to come with questions so that you'll have a relatively bump free college experience.
