According to the school, Clemson University is one of the country’s top public national universities known for its exceptional teaching and research. Clemson classes are small, almost 40 percent have less than 20 students, and its faculty are well known for their hands-on teaching methods. As a result, Clemson attracts some of the country’s brightest students. Clemson also has one of the country’s top Communication Across the Curriculum programs designed to ensure every student, regardless of major, graduates with strong written and oral communication skills. Listed as one of National Science Foundation’s top 100 research universities, Clemson offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of research experiences.\r\n\r\nThe Charles H. Houston Center for the Study of the Black Experience in Education at Clemson University was established in 1988 to disseminate information and address issues pertaining to the educational experiences and outcomes of African Americans at all levels of the educational system.\r\n\r\nClemson University is the only university or college in South Carolina where students can learn to play the carillon. The performing arts department provides group and private lessons. Since 1999, more than 100 Clemson students from more than 40 different majors have taken carillon lessons and classes. Carillonneurs play the instrument by striking a keyboard of two-foot wood batons with closed fists. The university has the distinction of having one of the few carillons in the country on its campus. With slightly more than 200 instruments in the United States, Clemson is fortunate to have such a majestic instrument for the entire community to enjoy. The dedication of the Clemson University Memorial Carillon on October 1987 completed a two-year fundraising, building and installation of six bronze bells known as the Clemson University Victory Peal. The motorized bells were heard signaling the start of each academic year and after each home football victory. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, Clemson University’s Habitat for Humanity chapter has been named Campus Chapter of the Year by Habitat for Humanity International.\r\n\r\nHabitat for Humanity Clemson’s chapter was selected for its strong relationship with the Pickens County Habitat for Humanity affiliate and for being a leader in green building practices.\r\n\r\nThe chapter now is working on a house that will apply for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. It will be the first Habitat house in South Carolina to be LEED certified.
