Strong partnerships with local government laboratories, including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Bureau of Reclamation and the US Geological Survey, provide rich opportunities for students to become involved in world-class research. In addition to strong education and research programs in traditional fields of science and engineering, Mines is one of a very few institutions in the world having broad expertise in resource exploration, extraction, production and utilization. Mines offers all the advantages of a world-class research institution with a size that allows for personal attention. With a student body of about 5,000, Mines has a student/faculty ratio of 16:1 and an avg. class size of about 33 students. Situated in Golden, Colorado, against the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the Mines community enjoys nearby hiking, camping, bicycling, kayaking, fly fishing, rock climbing, white-water rafting, skiing, and snowboarding; there are about a dozen major ski areas within a 1-3 hours’ drive from campus. Denver and Boulder are within 20 miles of campus, offering all the attractions of a large metropolitan area. Among numerous campus improvements, two major construction projects will open in the fall 2011. A new, 291-bed residence hall Maple Hall; and a $33 million, 78,000 sq. ft. addition to the Division of Engineering and Dept. of Mining Engineering’s, Brown Hall, will make it the largest classroom facility on campus. Two other construction projects will open in fall 2012. Marquez Hall a state-of-the-art $25 million facility for pioneering teaching, research and service promises to further Mines’ position as a global leader with a unique breadth of industry expertise. The new W. Lloyd Wright Student Wellness Ctr. will be the new home to the Student Health and Dental Ctr., and the Student Development and Academic Services Offices. The social environment is informal and friendly, and the academic environment is competitive, but also collaborative. Mines attracts an ambitious and motivated group of students, staff and faculty, and the career and graduate school opportunities for graduates are exceptional. Mines offers 18 varsity sports teams, our student athletes are competitive in the NCAA, Division II arena, and over 50 club and intramural teams meet the recreational interests of our highly active campus community. Students are involved in more than 160 clubs and organizations including music, student government, Greek Life, religious, cultural, special interest and professional associations and groups.
