Southeastern Oklahoma State University, one of six institutions in the Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO), was established as a normal school in 1909 with an early mission of training public schoolteachers. Dr. Larry Minks serves as the 19th president of Southeastern.\r\n \r\nIn addition to the main campus at Durant, programs are offered at the Southeastern-McCurtain County branch campus; Ardmore Higher Education Center; Eastern Oklahoma State College-McAlester campus; Tinker AFB and Oklahoma City Community College; and Grayson County College in Denison, Texas.\r\nCurrent enrollment is 4,000.\r\nDegree programs are offered through the School of Arts and Sciences, John Massey School of Business, School of Education and Behavioral Sciences, and School of Graduate and University Studies.\r\n \r\nProminent undergraduate degree programs relative to number of majors and graduates include Elementary Education, Biology, Occupational Safety and Health, Psychology, Health and Physical Education, Communication, Criminal Justice, Aviation, and Management. \r\n\r\nSelected graduate degrees are also offered, including a Master of Education with Elementary Education programs in Reading Specialist, and Special Education; School Counseling; School Administration; and Mathematics Specialist. Also offered is the Master of Science with programs in Occupational Safety and Health and Aerospace Administration and Logistics; the Master of Arts, with programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; the Master of Business Administration; and the Master of Technology, with programs in Biology and Information Technology.\r\n\r\nIn 2009, the John Massey School of Business earned initial accreditation in business from AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). In addition, in 2010, The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) reaffirmed the accreditation of the John Massey School of Business.\r\nSoutheastern is one of only six business programs world-wide accredited by both the AACSB and the ACBSP. \r\n\r\nIn 2010, Southeastern was once again approved for accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The University has been accredited by NCATE since the accreditation body was founded in 1954. \r\n\r\nThe University has a long and successful history of providing higher education opportunities for Native American students. Southeastern’s service area covers significant parts of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations and partners with the tribes to provide specialized services for all Native American students. Southeastern is among the national leaders in the percentage of graduates who are Native American, the overall number of Native American graduates, and Native American graduates in education.\r\n \r\nApproximately 70 percent of Southeastern students receive some type of financial aid assistance.\r\n \r\nIn recent years, the University has benefited from a tremendous upgrade in its physical facilities, with the construction of a new student union, a new residence hall, new tennis courts, and a renovated football stadium. A new arena opened in the fall of 2008, and a new general classroom building opened in 2010.\r\n \r\nBeginning in Fall 2011, Southeastern will compete in NCAA Division II athletics as a member of the newly-created Great American Conference.\r\n
