St. John’s College believes that the way to a liberal education lies through a direct and sustained engagement with the books in which the greatest minds of our civilization have expressed themselves. To that end, the college offers a four-year non-elective program in which students read, discuss, and write about the seminal works that have shaped the world in which we live.\r\n\r\nThe college offers small discussion classes, books that are classics, oral examinations at the end of each semester, a single interdisciplinary program of studies for everyone, and teachers who are called tutors rather than professors—one for every eight students.
