Augusta
University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) is a state university providing baccalaureate and select associate degrees to meet the educational, economic and cultural needs of Central Maine. With its rich array of professional programs, UMA attracts a unique mix of recent high school graduates and adults returning to the classroom. Operating campuses in Maine’s capital and in Bangor and sites and centers across the state, UMA is a community where everyone feels welcome and supported, and all are enriched by the interaction between young and older students. We’re friendly in our approach, serious about what we do, and fundamentally committed to serving the communities around us and the community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni that makes us a truly special place. A commuter institution, UMA is a great choice for students who wish or need to attend college without uprooting their lives. With its campuses in Augusta and Bangor and learning centers across the state, a UMA classroom is never far from anyone, and students can even take online courses right from their home. UMA specializes in professional programs designed for students interested in launching a new career or in enhancing their marketability in their current field. Our excellent Architecture program is the only one offered by a public higher education institution in northern New England, while our Jazz and Contemporary Music Program has been hailed by Downbeat Magazine as one of the best in the nation. Other top UMA programs include Business, Computer Information Systems, Nursing, Biology, Dental Hygiene, Liberal Studies, English, Public Administration, Veterinary Technology, Justice Studies, Library and Information Services, and Mental Health and Human Services. In all, UMA offers 29 degree programs. Some students enroll at UMA knowing exactly what they want to do and others need time to explore their options. UMA allows for both and also welcomes full time and part time students of every age. No matter whom you are, at UMA you will be taught by professors who combine the highest academic credentials with the real-world experience to superbly prepare you for starting a career. UMA professors, as well as our staff, also work hard to give every student the attention they need. We recognize every student is different, and that some thrive in the classroom while others struggle. From our world class faculty to our academic advisors and tutors, our supportive and caring staff is always ready to help. As a university, UMA also offers plenty to do outside of the classroom. Our beautiful Student Center is the hub for student activities, including the Student Government Association and our renowned Honors Program. Nearby in our state-of the-art Photo Lab, our popular Photography Club meets. If you’re not interested in any of those activities or the others offered on campus, you can start your own. There are also weekend trips to Boston or New York or rafting trips in the Maine wilderness. There are concerts, movies and speakers, a fitness center, and basketball and soccer teams to cheer on or try out for. Finally, you will discover that UMA offers a university education at a terrific value. UMA’s tuition is thousands of dollars less than most places. Plus, we’ll work with you to put together a financial aid package that can make UMA your path to a great future.
