According to the school, for 155 years, Wofford has been a consensus choice as one of America’s Best Colleges. Phi Beta Kappa- There are only 280 chapters of this prestigious honor society on the 3,500 college campuses across the United States. Wofford received its charter in 1941. Wofford is one of 122 colleges and universities related to the United Methodist Church. Consistent with that tradition, the college welcomes faculty and students of all faiths, as well as those of no faith. The faculty to student ratio is 1:11. A majority of class sections (59 percent) enrolled fewer than 20 students. First-year to sophomore retention (Class of 2013), 90 percent; First-year to graduation rate (Class of 2008), 81 percent. Of 15,994 alumni, 1,155 are in senior management of corporations or organizations; 1,213 practice medicine, dentistry or other health-care professions; 732 are attorneys or judges. 270 Wofford students earned credit through study overseas during Interim 2011 and 104 students completed semester-abroad programs in 25 countries during 2009-2010. Of the more than 700 colleges on the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, Wofford was one of only 115 to receive ‘distinction.’ In 2008-2009, Wofford’s student-led project was the national winner of the ONE Campus Challenge, competing against 1,400 colleges and universities. ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than two million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.
