Reasons to Attend
Comments about Brandeis University:
I transferred to Brandeis to complete my undergraduate degree (my first college lacked a degree program I was interested in), and I got a lot more than I bargained for.
The campus is small, but increasingly dense, as they cram more buildings into the acreage. Also, for a "small liberal arts college" there are a surprising number of graduate students (they make up maybe 1/4 of the total student body), and a stunning amount of hard-hitting basic research goes on. Again, while the campus and faculty are both smaller than comparably rated schools, the coursework is impressively diverse: in addition to my science major, I enjoyed classes in Buddhist art, medieval history, philosophy, economics, and epic poetry. Plus, most of the faculty are interested and passionate about teaching, making most classes a joy to attend.
Culturally, the school opened my eyes, but then I'm a gentile from the West Coast, and at least 2/3 of the student body is Jewish (and 3/4 come from the tri-state area of CT, NY and NJ). I had friends who swore they couldn't get away from the high school crowds they'd grown up with, but I soaked it all in and enjoyed it. The theater department is world-class (and offers discount tickets for students to attend their shows), and the on-campus music culture is strong. Plus, Brandeis is a short commuter-rail ride from one of the best cities in this country, Boston.
On the flipside, if you don't quite know what you want out of a college, this is not a great place to meander through the course catalog. Tuition, room and board are not cheap, and sometimes you miss out on a particular, necessary, course as the one professor who teaches it is out on sabbatical for a year.
